Yoda may have become an icon in “Star Wars” in the 1970s, but a character resembling the master Jedi appeared in a medieval manuscript more than 600 years earlier.
The Yoda-like figure, complete with green skin, big ears and a orange cloak, was drawn in the Smithfield Decretals, a 14th-century French collection of papal letters, the British Library reported on its Medieval Manuscripts blog Tuesday.
The book, made between 1300 and 1340, details church doctrine and contains biblical stories and animal fables.
“I’d love to say that it really was Yoda, or was drawn by a medieval time traveler,” Julian Harrison, who runs the blog, told NPR. “It’s actually an illustration to the biblical story of Samson — the artist clearly had a vivid imagination!” Read more
