The Force was with John Williams’ 1977 composition and it won more than 20 per cent of votes in a poll carried out by Radio Times and BBC Music Magazine. Controversially the James Bond theme – composed by Monty Norman and aired in 1962’s Dr No – finished only in 11th place. Elmer Bernstein’s theme to PoW epic The Great Escape came in 17th while Henry Mancini’s Pink Panther theme was 19th in the poll of more than 2,000 readers.
