Once again, Disney is shifting the release dates to a number of their films due to theater closures from the coronavirus pandemic. That includes a delay in the release of the new Star Wars trilogy.
The new trilogy, reportedly under the leadership of Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, was originally scheduled to release its first entry on December 16, 2022. The subsequent films would be released every two years after that.
Now, Disney has delayed those releases by an entire year.
The new release dates for the upcoming Star Wars trilogy (which have no titles yet) are as follows:
The first Star Wars film is moving from December 16, 2022 to December 22, 2023.
The second Star Wars film is moving from December 20, 2024 to December 19, 2025.
The third Star Wars film is moving from December 18, 2026 to December 17, 2027.
It appears Lucasfilm is committing to Taika Waititi to lead the Star Wars film franchise for now. The studio is not commenting on Rian Johnson’s previously-announced trilogy of Star Wars films. In addition, the director has offered no proof he is working on it. Given the negative response to The Last Jedi, Lucasfilm may not be keen on moving forward with his films.
