Doctor Who star Matt Smith will appear in Star Wars: Episode IX, reports say.
The 35-year-old British actor is technically still in talks for a role in the film, but he is expected to officially sign on shortly. Variety first reported the news.
Smith earned fame the the 11th Doctor Who, and went on to earn an Emmy nomination for Netflix’s The Crown. He also appeared in 2015’s Terminator: Genisys.
According to IMDB, Smith has admitted to not seeing all of the Star Wars films, an oversight he’ll likely correct before he takes the role.
He will join a returning cast from the new trilogy that includes Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd.
Returning from the original trilogy are Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams, and the late Carrie Fisher, who will be seen in unused footage from 2015’s The Force Awakens.
Episode IX has also added Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell and Dominic Monaghan.
The film will be directed by J.J. Abrams, and is set to open Dec. 20, 2019.
