Liam Neeson is returning to the Star Wars universe. He’ll be reprising his role as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in a new Star Wars series for Disney+.
Neeson will voice Qui-Gon in Tales of the Jedi, an animated anthology series coming in the fall of 2022 from executive producer Dave Filoni. The series was announced by Filoni at a panel during Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim this past weekend. According to IGN, episodes will only be 15 minutes long, and will tell the stories of Jedi during the Prequel Era. Animation will be similar to what was seen in Clone Wars and other Star Wars animated series. A trailer was shown during the panel, but was not released online.
The panel revealed that among the episodes will be three-episode story arcs for both a young Ahsoka and a young Count Dooku. One episode was screened, showing the birth and early years of Ahsoka with her mother. Neeson, however, will appear in the Dooku episodes, and his real-life son will voice a younger Qui-Gon in flashbacks within the episode. Neeson’s involvement in the series appears limited to these episodes only.
Although Neeson has discussed the possibility of retiring recently, he has remained busy with a number of action films. This year alone, his films Memory and Blacklight hit theaters, and he appeared in Netflix’s The Ice Road in 2021. He recently denied he would ever do a television series, Star Wars or otherwise. That seems to have been pure misdirection, as we now know. It has been 23 years since he played Qui-Gon Jinn in Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
