The Oscars website often highlights bits of film history, and they recently posted this little doozy, a trailer for Revenge of the Jedi from May of 1982! What really makes the trailer unique, however, is the mention of a Christmas 1983 release for the film. Before The Force Awakens, Star Wars films were always released in May, but according to the Oscars website, Lucasfilm wanted a Christmas release for Jedi to boost toy sales. Apparently, the focus on merchandising is nothing new.
The trailer was only seen by British moviegoers who attended a double feature engagement of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back that opened in May of 1982, but after a May 1983 release date for Jedi was finalized, the trailer was pulled. A copy of the trailer has survived, however, and can now be enjoyed by everyone:
