A panel at Wondercon Saturday revealed a major surprise: Mark Hamill would provide the voice for Chucky in this year’s Child’s Play reboot.
The announcement came in a video shown at Orion Studios’ panel at Wondercon, which Hamill posted to his social media Saturday evening. In it, he said “If you’re wondering who’s going to play Chucky in the new Child’s Play, you’re looking at him.”
His video (posted below) was met with wild approval by the cheering crowd at Wondercon, and the video quickly started to trend online.
The new Child’s Play stars Aubrey Plaza, Gabriel Bateman, and Brian Tyree Henry, updates the premise to a modern setting, and is not connected to the original films. In the film, a single mom (Plaza) buys an interactive companion for her son, only to find “Buddi” not only has artificial intelligence, it has a knack for murder. It opens in theaters June 21.
Hamill takes over the role from Lord of the Rings actor Brad Dourif, who has played Chucky since the original film in 1988.
