May the 4th Be With You (Star Wars Day) is a day of serious celebration for fans of George Lucas’ space saga. We decided to add May 5th to the festivities as well, and Revenge of the 5th was born.
May the 4th was officially recognized by Lucasfilm in 2013, but it had been around unofficially for years before. In 2012, however, we started the Revenge of the 5th website to celebrate the fringes of Star Wars fandom.
It actually started with an observation by ROT5 staffer Chris Medina, who wondered if May 4th played off of “May the Force Be With You,” then May 5th should be called “Revenge of the 5th” as a play off of the Episode III title. We took the idea and ran with it, and the website you’re on now is the result.
We decided to make Star Wars Day a 2-day affair, with May 5th celebrating everything from the Dark Side to the goofy and funny fringes of the Star Wars universe.
We can’t really lay claim to being the first to use the phrase “Revenge of the 5th,” but we’re proud that our little website helped popularize it.
In 2016, Inverse featured us in an article about Star Wars Day, with a follow-up in 2018.
Know Your Meme featured us in their story on the origins of Revenge of the 5th.
We’ve also been featured or mentioned by Comic Book Resources, One Geek, Pop Culture Experiment, and Inquisitr, and we appreciate their help in promoting our website.
And so, this website is a commemoration of all things a little off, bizarre, or zany in the Star Wars Universe. Remember, everything you see and read here is meant to be taken in the spirit of fun. Don’t get offended and have a good time.
